Hong Kong police clarify: law enforcement methods are distorted by wrong online information
The Hong Kong police issued a clarification to the media on the 22nd regarding some artificially modified videos and pictures circulating on the Internet, which caused the public to misunderstand the police's law enforcement methods.
Superintendent Mok Chun-kit of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Investigation Bureau of the SAR Government Police said at a police press conference on the 22nd that one of the pictures on the Internet showed a family being chased by riot police at New Town Plaza in Sha Tin, but the video played by the police at the press conference clearly showed that the police were escorting them to a safe place. Later, the family publicly thanked the police for protecting them.
Mo Junjie said that an online video showed a police officer kicking a demonstrator who had been subdued on the ground in an attempt to stir up public sentiment against the police. He explained that this was because the pixels of the video circulating on the Internet were too low, which made it look like the policeman’s feet were moving. However, in the high-resolution video obtained and played by the police, it can be seen that this is not the case.
The police also played a video of the demonstration at the press conference, in which a young man suddenly jumped off a bridge, but multiple police officers caught him in time to save his life. However, the incident was described online as police pushing the young man off a bridge.
Police stated that a large number of citizens held a public event at MTR Yuen Long Station on the evening of August 21. It was peaceful and orderly at first, but later a group of radical demonstrators rushed to the road outside the station and used trash cans, minibus stop signs and other debris as roadblocks to block nearby traffic. The police took action to disperse and arrested two male suspects, aged 27 and 36, on charges of unlawful assembly.
In addition, in response to the serious fight that occurred at MTR Yuen Long Station on July 21, the police have formally charged two male suspects with participating in riots. The two men will appear in court on August 23 for trial. The police are actively investigating the case and will follow up on the prosecution of other arrested suspects.
